Cheese, crackers and wine – what’s not to like?  Plenty.

June 16, 2015

First, here is a note.  I reviewed this after the “best by” date on the package (6 days later).  I don’t believe this affected the overall review, but it may have affected the consistency of the cheese.  This is one product where the “best by” date is important.  So, don’t leave it in your refrigerator for a month after purchase like I did.

The room temperature cheese had a consistency like a soft and a little runny cake icing.  The consistency may be the result of the relatively long time it was stored before eating.  From experience with other goat cheeses, I was expecting some degree of tartness in the cheese.  I found that tart quality missing.  In its place was a weird aftertaste that’s a little biting on the tongue and a little peppery.

Spread on a wheat cracker (review here), the saltiness of the cracker helped improve the experience by balancing the peppery aftertaste of the cheese.  The soft cheese helped to mediate the firmness of the cracker making it a good combination in that way also.  The only problem was that some of the crackers tended to be too salty – but that’s not the fault of the cheese.  This was also tested with a white wine (review here).  The wine, which I didn’t particularly like, tended to overpower both the cheese and cracker.  A different white wine might have a better outcome.

If you really like brie you might want to give this a try just to check it off your list.  Otherwise, stick with something you know you’ll like.
