Andy Warhol would be proud!

Here we have another two mundane food items up for review.  It’s a chicken noodle soup-off between ALDI’s Chef”s Cupboard Chicken Noodle Soup and America’s sweetheart Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup.  And while the ties are still in the dry cleaner for spot removal, the winner is Andy Warhol’s poster child, Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup, with the one exception of price.  Campbell’s costs significantly more.  But I’m guessing you knew that already.  So click the “read more” button below to further unravel the noodles.

First, contrary to directions, only 1/2 can of water was added to each condensed soup in preparation.  The can directions for both call for a full can of water to be added to the condensed soups.  Generally that’s a flavor preference.  The less water added, the more flavor in the mouth.  But that choice is up to you.  A microwave oven was used to heat each soup.

The Campbell’s Chicken Noodle soup had it all over the ALDI store brand for flavor, appearance and texture.  The color of the Campbell’s was yellow compared to a pale grey-yellow for Chef’s Cupboard.  There were obvious small fat droplets floating in the Campbell’s which probably accounted for the better taste.  Fats in general carry most of the flavors in foods.  The noodles were slightly thicker and longer, but more importantly seemed to have a better texture in the Campbell’s.

While ALDI’s Chef’s Cupboard lost in the food competition, it won in the value competition.  And even though Campbell’s was more enjoyable as a food, the Chef’s Cupboard was an acceptable soup with no bad taste characteristics.  The nutrition values for each are almost identical.  The tested price of the Campbell’s was $1.00 per can on sale.  The normal price is somewhere around $1.50 to $1.70 per can at a major supermarket.  This compares with 49 cents for the ALDI Chef’s Cupboard.  That’s a big difference, even considering the Campbell’s sale price.  So again, it’s a trade-off  between taste and value.

ALDI – Chef’s Cupboard  – Calories 60 per 1/2 cup serving (condensed) – Price  49 cents (regular price)

Campbell’s – Calories 60 per 1/2 cup serving (condensed) – Price  $1.00 (on sale)
