ALDI – No Sugar Added Chocolate Fudge Pops vs. Target vs. Fudgsicle – Food Review

Today we fudge off three “no sugar added” frozen chocolate pops.  Having only 35-40 calories per fudge pop and total carbohydrates per pop under 10 g, these are a quick pop of chocolate for people wanting to watch their carbohydrate consumption.  There are also “sugar added” versions of these pops, so look at the label carefully if you want to avoid the extra sugar.

As you may have guessed, with no added sugar, artificial sweeteners including sugar alcohols help to sweeten the deal.  So do check out the ingredient labels just in case you have an aversion to any of the ingredients.  As a matter of truth in testing, two testers (with totally different tastes) fudged off for this review.

These no sugar added pops have the darkest chocolate color and taste. As the first ingredient listed is water, these pops also have a more watery feel in the mouth.  The other two have a creamier mouth feel.  These are also less sweet than the other two.  In fact there’s a bit of bitterness in the chocolate taste.  One tester liked these best because of the darker chocolate taste and less sweetness, even though the mouth feel was less creamy.  The other tester rated these last.
Calories – 40 per pop   Price – $1.69 per box of  12

Fudgsicle is the original fudge pop, according to the box and in spite of the unexpected spelling.  These are lighter in color, creamier and sweeter than the ALDI pops.  If you’re more of a milk chocolate person, you may like these over the ALDI pops.  Nonfat milk is the first ingredient listed, which may explain why these seem creamier.  One tester rated these first because of the extra sweetness and creaminess.  The other rated these second.
Calories – 40 per pop    Price – about $1.90 per box of 8

Creaminess, mouth feel and sweetness make these close to the Fudgsicle with one exception.  Both testers thought the chocolate taste was just a little odd.  The first ingredient in these is skim milk.  One tester rated these second, the other third.
Calories – 35 per pop    Price – $1.79 per box of 12

You may ask, “What do you buy?”  If so, the answer is, since all three stores are generally out of these most of the time, I’ll buy any of them when I find them in the freezer case.  Better to have a pop than not.
