For the west coast crowd, here’s a Trader Joe’s ultra dark roasted coffee for consideration.

August 25, 2015

There’s a nice deep aroma in the can when first opened.  You just want to keep your nose in the can and breath.  The breathing part is especially important even if you don’t want your nose in the can.  The bean itself has a nice toasted taste with hardly any bitterness.  The beans have a beautiful shiny deep brown color indicative of the dark roast.

The coffee brews to a rich dark color as one would expect from the color of the beans.  The flavor is “thick”.  There’s a lot of  body to the coffee, leaving a mouth feel that almost fools you into thinking the coffee has to be chewed.  There’s not much bitterness.

The thick feel of the coffee diminishes as the coffee cools slightly.  There’s an earthy taste in the mouth, and still really no bitterness.  The ultra dark roast gives this coffee a considerably different taste than all the coffees reviewed here previously.

One distinctive feature of this very dark roast is that the taste and feel stays in the mouth long after the cup has been emptied – perhaps even stretching past the point of the bladder being emptied.

I’m not a fan of dark roasted coffee, so I won’t be purchasing this again.  However, if you like dark roasted coffee, this may be something you’ll like.  This is a dark roast without the bitterness and some of the other bad qualities dark roasts seem to have.  The can is also nice to look at.

Price $6.99 (12 ounce can)

I absolutely do not like coffee which I realize is, for various reasons, my loss. Reading your review I was almost tempted to try the coffee … almost.

For people who don’t like coffee, this is not a coffee to try first. You’re doing good to push that temptation aside.
