Along with the disappearance of the Identity Crisis Chips, in their place, on the shelf, comes TJ’s Multigrain Tortilla Chips. Have the chips found their identity or is this a corn chip coup? If these are supposed to be a replacement for the Crisis chips, there’s something to be said for not being sure who you are.
While all this is a matter of what you like, these new chips aren’t as good as the old Crisis chips. They’re really not the same chip with a different name. Both are similar in that they use multiple grains to make their own style of flour. White corn is the predominant grain in the Multigrain chips. The other grains, and grain like bits, on the label read like bird food, minus earthworms, bugs, etc. Overall, like most things at TJ’s, they’re a little different. If you’re expecting the normal wheat or corn flour tortilla chip, these aren’t them. If you’re like me these won’t tempt you to eat the whole bag in one sitting. Really, that’s a bad thing. Like the Crisis chips, these don’t seem to have a lot of salt on them. That’s a chip negative for me. The other thing that’s a little strange is the texture. They seem hard while chewing. Maybe that’s because of the steel cut oats in them?
In summary, when compared to the old Crisis chips these are: slightly less good, more expensive, labeled organic, not labeled gluten free, but kosher (Parve).
How do they work with salsa? Surprisingly, much better. The salsa softens the chip up a little, while adding some balancing flavor. How about heads up against Tostitos Bite Size (stone ground white corn) tortilla chips? As a naked chip, the Tostitos work better. But not a whole lot better. With salsa, the TJ chips are better. The Tostitos get a little too soft. How about TJ’s chips with some French onion dip? Well, in numerous ways this is just a totally wrong combination. However, even in this strange situation, they work about as well as can be expected.
The bottom line. TJ’s Multigrain Tortilla Chips; are not as good as TJ’s old Identity Crisis chips, are marginal as a naked tortilla chip, but work well with salsa.
