Trader Joe’s Spinach Pie – Spanakopita

by

It’s not like Mama used to make.  But then, Mama never made Spanakopita.

The most amazing thing with this product is that it’s baked in the cardboard box it comes in.  And I’m not talking about microwave baking.  I’m talking about a real oven.  Right in the cardboard box, and no flames.

As for the eating experience,  not bad.  It’s a little on the bland side.  A lot of spinach.  Not so much feta cheese.  The filo dough is only on the top and bottom.  The last and only time I made this myself, it seems that I ended up with some kind of layers of filo and filling.  I may have rolled the filo and filling to do that.  That’s a little different approach.

But, the bottom line, if you want something you probably don’t eat often, try Trader Joe’s Spinach Pie.  With all the spinach, it’s got to be good for you.

Calories per serving 240.  Serving size, 1/4 package.

If you’d like to try making spanakopita for yourself, here’s a recipe that will get you there.  And, it will be better.

Try this spanakopita recipe link. It’s easy.
The spanakopita recipe can be made into a “pie” recipe by laying about 10 sheets of the oiled filo dough on the bottom of a casserole dish, layering the spinach/feta mixture next, and then the top layer of about 10 more oiled filo sheets. Bake, but don’t burn. Or just eat enough of the spanakopita rolls and call it an entree.
